Questions & Answers

So, you are considering whether Mountaineering and Nuneaton MC is for you. If your questions aren't answered on these web pages, please E Mail any of the committee and we'll try to answer them personally

Q What equipment will I need to start Mountaineering? A A basic kit is all that is required to start you off. We would recommend that the minimum would be...

1. A pair of sturdy walking boots and socks to suit.

2. A waterproof coat and waterproof trousers.

3. A warm hat and gloves.

4. A rucksack to carry food and clothing.

As with everything, prices can vary a great deal, by talking to members of the group you will be able to ascertain what you need to spend.

Membership of the club entitles you to 10% discount at many retailers to help reduce those costs.

Q How far will I have to walk? A Nuneaton MC offer a variety of walks, some of them very short some extremely long. Before each walk we will be able to inform you how long (approximately) a walk will be and how difficult it will be.
Q How old do I have to be to become a member? A There is no maximum age limit, but we can only accept members who are over 18 years of age. (16 if accompanied by a guardian)
Q How much is membership? A £12 per year, which includes third party insurance through the BMC and discounts at local retailers.
Q What if I haven't got a car? A Nuneaton MC organise a car share scheme on their trips, so if you haven't got transport you will have no problem getting to the mountains, all we ask is that you pay a share of the petrol costs. This scheme works well for all of us, making trips to relatively distant places affordable.
Q How often do Nuneaton MC go out? A We have a set programme of one walk or weekend per calendar month. (Usually the second Saturday) Other walks and activities are organised on a weekly basis at the Thursday evening meetings.
Q Will I have to pay membership straight away and what happens if mountaineering is not for me? A We don't expect you to pay for membership until you have tried us out. Mountaineering isn't for everyone, some people just don't enjoy getting wet in the hills. We will allow you to go on up to three mountaineering trips with us before you have to decide whether you want to continue with us by becoming a full member.
Q How fit do I need to be? A A reasonable level of fitness is beneficial so that you may enjoy mountaineering from the start, however it is not essential. The more you do, the fitter you will become.
Q Do I need to be able to read a map? A No, however we would like you to learn to map read and we would be more than happy to teach you should you wish .
Q If I want to go on a weekend activity, where will I stay? A Youth hostel, Guest house, Bunk house, Hotel, or tent, the choice is yours, if you want to camp but haven't got a tent there will always be someone willing to share theirs.
